I met Chaim when I joined Young Israel of Kendall--must have been late 1980s or early 1990s. We became fast friends. He started out at a Kendall temple, but graduated to Orthodoxy. His birth certificate had his name as "Charles Burke". Apparently, his father had changed the family name from Berkowitz to something that sounded less Jewish! When Chaim became religious, he legally changed his name to Chaim Berkowitz! After I moved to NMB in 2006, I learned that Chaim had become a Lubavitcher Chassid--Chaim said that "he went to the dark side of the force!" Last time I saw him was on 10th Avenue on Shabbos as he was going to Bais Menachem and I was going to YIGM. He always greeted me with a bear hug and a kiss. He will be missed! May his memory always be for a blessing.
