"Efraim, You Don't Want That"

During the early years of Beis Menachem the kiddushim were held in the Sanctuary. Two long tables were set up, one for the men and one for the women. On this particular Shabbos, Efraim was sitting across from me, his back to Tzivia who was seated across from him at the women's table.

Tzivia closely monitored Efraim's food intake. He was known to sneak a piece of cake, rugelach....any matamim within reach when Tzivia wasn't looking.

When the dessert came out after the cholent I helped myself to an assortment from the tray. Efraim, knowing these foods were verboten to him, declined. After watching me devour the pastry he surreptitiously removed one from my plate and before he could dig in a voice from across the room proclaimed, "Efraim...YOU DON'T WANT THAT!!!
Tzivia was facing Efraim's back and couldn't possibly have seen him finesse the pastry into his plate. To this day nobody knows how she did it. Chava Leah and I miss her dearly.
