Stories & Memories of Reb Menachem Mendel Hacohen Aronow

By: Rabbi Yossi Schochet June 22

makpid on EVERYTHING

He was very makpid on EVERYTHING. If salt is a ochel, how can you walk on it?!

On Yom Kippur he spent lots of time with me figuring out how to achieve the least "issur" of taking his heart medicine with water... On using a cane on shabbos, he told me many great rabbonim used canes on shabbos- but he thought it was because they had chosheve canes with silver handles (a tachshit), not like his pisheteh cane...I told him if he needs the cane indoors, he can use it outdoors, even his poshte cane...

I also was honored that he ate cake that was made in my house - when he farbrenged in my sukkah years ago (there was no sukkah in yeshiva), it was shabbos- yom tov. The oilom came to my sukkah. The farbeisin included home baked cake. He asked me if the eggs were checked. When I told him they were, he said he can rely on me and will eat the cake. That was a big chidush, as we know, he never eats m'chutz.
