tidbits

for tashlic years ago we went to a ravine with a creek not to far south of where people go nowadays. reb mendel had the custom of washing his hands in the creek. afterwards one of the bachurim would say chasidus by a park bench near the ravine. he was afraid of the dogs. I am not sure why however perhaps it was because he was in Russian jail for being frum. he never wanted to talk about it. however one time when learning 'graff shel ray' was mentioned ( a chamber pot). someone there did not understand so to describe what it was reb mendel described the inside of a Russian jail cell. once by kiddush he showed us how much is the ROV kois. when drinking when you first see the bottom of the glass revealed its enough. when I moved south I davened where reb mendel davened. there was always little tibits of wisdom to be heard. and to see how he davened. he davened covering his face with his tallit. someone joked around that he was having a shluff. I asked him later and he told me he was up early to chaser a mymar and he was thinking it over until he came to the nekudot with this he was able to daven like a chassid. after davening on shabbos he often made a farbrengen with just a small crowd of lubavitch he didnt like to speak in large crowds with a microphone standing by a shtender. eventually we drifted to the yeshivah where we stayed all these years. in the shul we were at there were late comers who wanted to give shalom and I was very serious with davening so in order not to be disturbed like reb mendel I put the tallit over my face. I started to sense something ; at first I was not sure what it was however after some time I realized when reb mendel walked into shull the feeling came over me. either i heard his voice or i peeked and saw him. so the feeling was connected to him. maybe it was because he was thinking chassidus and not business like most men. when we davened by the yeshivah i no longer had that feeling. too much kadusha there. he was a very special person and he will be missed. may the resurrection come speedily in our days and mendel will arise with the tzadikim and we will sing praise to the aibishter.
